Delete Recording Blocks in Secondary VRM with Extended Retention Time on standalone VRM

Possible causes and solution(s)

Symptoms

This article applies when you are unable to delete certain recording blocks in a secondary VRM that were expected to be automatically deleted. A Primary VRM and a Secondary VRM for dual recording of Bosch cameras/encoders are used, with a retention time set to 30 days for both VRMs. These blocks were incorrectly assigned a retention time of the current year + 32 years ahead, which is far beyond the expected 30-day maximum retention time. When some cameras were added to the secondary VRM, they were not placed in “DUAL VRM” mode immediately. As a result, these cameras assumed the maximum retention time for an SD card (32 years), leading to blocks being set with retention times extending to the current year + 32 years ahead.

Desired result: delete these blocks and free up storage space, which is critical for maintaining the system’s optimal operation.

Solution

The only official method to remove video recordings in the VRM system is through an alternative workaround described below:

1. Temporarily Remove the Camera from the VRM. This will transfer all recordings to the unmanagedCameras page.

2. Expand the individual camera's details by clicking the camera link. This will display the individual recording blocks.

3. Delete the Specific Recording Blocks that are no longer needed.

   • This process is demonstrated in the video guide below, showing the steps to delete specific blocks and re-add the camera without affecting other recordings.

4. Re-add the Camera back to the VRM.

   • The camera should now be removed from the unmanaged cameras page, and all undeleted recordings will reappear as expected.

Additionally, you should consider upgrading to a higher version of VRM to avoid similar issues in the future. In VRM 4.02 (see Release Note), a fix was introduced for the issue of incorrect 32-year retention time.
